Banff Hoodoos
Banff Hoodoos are composed sedimentary rock covered by harder rock that is harder to erode. In time, once softer sediment erodes rock, needle or tower like natural obstacles are left. They are extremely unique formations to see!
Location
Drive up Tunnel Mountain road from the town to get there. After you pass the hotels on top of the hill you will pass a campground on your left. You will find the sign on your right as you keep going. Parking will be on your left. (Please do not to park in the bus parking zone. If there is a car there the busses may block your car if they need to and can’t go around.)
Please be careful. There are a few guard rails to help keep you in a safe area to view. You can see the Hoodoos below as well as down in the valley. You may see some people walking under the Hoodoos. If you want to go, there is no official trail and you need good shoes that have excellent grip.
You can look down on the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course as well as the hotel to the right up the valley. It is a beautiful view and additionally very easy to get to, especially on a nice day.
Plan a stop at the Hoodoos on a day out. Additionally, in the Summer months combine this with Tunnel Mountain Drive and Surprise Corner.
To repeat, the Hoodoos are formed over thousands of years of erosion. They are a combination of hard rock with soft rock left in a rare combination leaving these rare and unique structures.
A day of discovering in and around Banff should include Tunnel Mountain Drive, a look at the Hoodoos, but as well a trip up Sulphur Mountain on the Banff Gondola!
